Issue description
When configuring SSL in ADAudit Plus, you may encounter the following error message:
“The certificate does not have a private key installed.”
This issue occurs when the SSL certificate being imported into ADAudit Plus lacks the associated private key that was originally generated during the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) creation process. Without the private key, ADAudit Plus cannot establish a secure HTTPS connection.
Prerequisites
Before proceeding with troubleshooting, ensure the following:
You have administrator access to the ADAudit Plus server and the web console.
The ADAudit Plus service is running and accessible.
The SSL certificate you are importing was generated using a CSR created on the same server where ADAudit Plus is installed.
You have access to the private key file (if it was exported separately) or a certificate format that includes it (e.g., .pfx or .p12).
Possible causes
CSR and Certificate Mismatch: The SSL certificate might have been generated on a different server or system than the one used to create the original Certificate Signing Request (CSR). In such cases, the private key associated with the CSR is not present on the ADAudit Plus server.
Private Key Not Included During Certificate Generation: While generating the SSL certificate, if the private key was not exported or included with the certificate file (for instance, when using .cer or .crt formats), ADAudit Plus will display this error since it cannot locate the corresponding private key.
Incorrect Certificate Format Used: The imported certificate file may be in a format that does not contain the private key (e.g., .cer or .crt without .pfx).
Resolution
Generate a New CSR with Private Key from ADAudit Plus
Log in to the ADAudit Plus web console using an administrator account.
Navigate to: Admin → General Settings → Connection → SSL Certificate Tool → Generate Certificate
Enter the required details such as Organization Name, Common Name (FQDN), and Location Information.
Click Generate CSR to create a new Certificate Signing Request (CSR) along with a private key stored on the ADAudit Plus server.
Obtain the Signed Certificate from a Trusted CA
Share the generated CSR file with your Certificate Authority (CA) to get the signed certificate.
Ensure the CA provides a file format that includes the private key (e.g., .pfx, .p12) or allows you to bind the private key manually during import.
Import the SSL Certificate into ADAudit Plus
Once you receive the certificate from the CA, go to:
Admin → General Settings → Connection → SSL Certificate Tool → Import Certificate
Browse and upload the .pfx, .p12, or corresponding certificate file.
If prompted, provide the private key password.
Click Save Changes to apply the certificate.
Restart ADAudit Plus Service
After successfully importing the certificate, restart the ADAudit Plus service for the new SSL configuration to take effect:
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
Locate ManageEngine ADAudit Plus, right-click, and select Restart.
