Objective
This article explains how to add a new technician in ADSelfService Plus and assign appropriate roles. This process allows for the delegation of specific administrative tasks, enhancing efficiency and workflow.
Understanding technician types
ADSelfService Plus supports two types of technicians, each with a different authentication method.
Domain-based technician: This technician is an existing Active Directory user. They log in to ADSelfService Plus using their standard domain credentials and their administrative control is limited to the specific domain to which they belong. This is the recommended type for users within your organization.
Product-based technician: This is a local account created only within ADSelfService Plus. You will manually create a unique username and password for them. This type of technician has administrative control over all domains configured in the application. This is useful for external consultants or administrators who are not part of your domain.
Prerequisites
You must have super admin privileges in ADSelfService Plus.
For adding domain-based technicians, the user account must already exist in the configured Active Directory domain.
Steps to add a new technician
Log in to the ADSelfService Plus portal with super admin credentials.
Navigate to Configuration > Administrative Tools > Technician > + Add New Technician.
A pop-up window will appear. Select the Technician Type:
For a Domain-based Technician:
Assign the appropriate role, such as Super Admin or Operator.
Select the appropriate domain the user belongs to.
Click the + icon in the Select Users/Groups field to choose the desired user(s) or group(s) from Active Directory.
For a Product-based Technician:
Click Add to create the technician.
Assigning and customizing technician roles
Roles define the level of access a technician has within the ADSelfService Plus portal. You can use default roles or create custom ones to enforce the principle of least privilege.
To assign roles, navigate to Configuration > Administrative Tools > Technician > Role Settings.
Super Admin: Has unrestricted access to all modules, configurations, and settings.
Operator: Has restricted access. By default, this role has read-only access to reports and user information.
Custom roles: You can create granular roles with specific permissions (e.g., a help desk role that can only reset passwords and view reports).
