1. What is the recommended number of days to set for log retention?
It depends on your organization’s needs. A 60–90 day retention is adequate for most environments. However, industries with strict compliance requirements (e.g., finance or healthcare) may require longer retention.
2. When I enable this setting, will it delete all old logs immediately?
Yes, the old logs will be deleted immediately.
3. What happens if I disable log retention?
If log retention is disabled, ADSelfService Plus will continue to store logs indefinitely. This can cause the application drive to fill up over time, potentially leading to performance degradation or service downtime.
4. Can I export logs before they are automatically deleted?
Yes. We highly recommend archiving the contents of the Logs folder to a separate storage location or a log management tool like a SIEM before they are purged, especially if you have long-term audit requirements. You can create a scheduled script to zip and move the folder's contents periodically.
5. Are deleted logs recoverable?
Once logs are deleted by the retention policy, they cannot be recovered. If recovery of logs is critical, configure a log archival or backup strategy with ManageEngine Log360 or any other third-party tool before applying the retention policy.
6. Does this log retention setting affect the audit data shown in the application's reports?
No, it does not. This feature only deletes the raw log files (TXT, LOG) from the server's file system. The audit data and reports visible within the ADSelfService Plus web console are stored in the application's database and are not affected by this setting.
