Error: Existing Installation Detected. Setup Has Detected an Earlier Version of ADManager Plus

Issue description   

You may encounter this message during the installation or upgrade of ADManager Plus when the setup identifies an existing version already installed on the server. This prompt is intended to prevent accidental overwriting of the current setup or loss of existing data.

Possible causes 

  1. An older version of ADManager Plus is already installed in the same directory.

  2. A prior uninstallation was not fully completed, leaving behind residual files or registry entries.

  3. The installer is being executed in a directory that still contains files from a previous installation.

Prerequisites   

  • Have administrative privileges on the server where ADManager Plus is currently installed.

  • Have knowledge of the existing installation directory (default location: C:\ManageEngine\ADManager Plus).

  • Have a complete backup of ADManager Plus data, including configuration files, database, and logs if you intend to uninstall or overwrite the installation.

Resolution  

Scenario 1: Upgrading an existing installation  

If you are intentionally upgrading the current instance of ADManager Plus:

  • Run the installer and choose the same directory as the existing installation (default: C:\ManageEngine\ADManager Plus).

  • The setup will automatically upgrade the product while retaining all configurations and data.

  • After installation, log in and ensure your settings, configurations, and reports are intact.

Scenario 2: Installing a new instance separately  

If you want to install a separate instance without interfering with the existing setup:

  • During installation, choose a different directory, such as C:\ManageEngine\ADManagerPlus_New.

  • Configure non-conflicting ports that are different from the existing instance, e.g., port 8081 instead of 8080.

  • Launch the new instance and confirm both installations work independently.

Scenario 3: The previous installation was not fully removed  

If you receive the message despite not having a working installation:

  1. Check for leftover files in the previous install directory (default: C:\ManageEngine\ADManager Plus).

  2. If the application is no longer in use:

    • Back up any remaining data if needed.

    • Delete the folder manually to remove residual files.

  1. Optionally, check for and clean up related registry entries (only if you're comfortable editing the registry).

  2. Re-run the installer. If the message no longer appears, the remnants were successfully removed.

Tips   

  • Back up your ADManager Plus installation before any upgrade or fresh installation.

  • Use versioned folders (e.g., v8.0 or v9.0) to manage separate environments, like testing and production.

  • Ensure each instance uses a unique port and installation path to avoid conflicts.

  • Check the server.xml and product.conf files for any port conflicts when configuring a new instance.
