[Tips & Tricks] How to find OID's for new devices ?

What is an OID?

Object Identifier (OID) is the unique id provided by the manufacturer to identify the device/system information. Each device's information would have a unique OID.

Here we are going to discuss the 2 easy ways to find OID information,

                  1. Get a MIB file from the Manufacturer
                  2. SNMP walk using a MIB browser
2.1. Using Inbuilt MIB browser in SDP
                              2.2. Using External MIB browser

Get a MIB file from the Manufacturer:

Since OID's will be defined by the manufacturer, they provide the object values to us in one file called Management Information Base(MIB). You can reach the device manufacturer to get the MIB files. If the OID is present in the MIB file, you can upload it in the MIB browser to get the specific information on the device.

SNMP walk using a MIB browser:

This method helps us to find the OID information from the device itself by doing an SNMP walk. SNMP walk would get all the information in a MIB tree. Here we are going to use the following two methods to find the OID.

2.1 Using InBuilt MIB browser in SDP
                      2.2 Using External MIB browser

Using InBuilt MIB browser in SDP:

We do have an inbuilt MIB browser which helps to find the OID.

Admin --> SNMP configurations --> MIB Browser

Step 1 :
Open MIB browser and set credentials, you can choose between the SNMP versions. Also, you could use the saved credential list from the credentials library.

Step 2 :
Enter the device hostname and OID as .1 or .iso then click on Get to fetch the device information.

In the fetched data, look for the information you are trying to find.

For example, The OID of my wireless adapter is the one listed across the name of my wireless adapter

Using External MIB browser:

If you are not able to find any information in the inbuilt MIB browser. We can use an external MIB browser to find the OID.

Here we are going to use the free MIB browser that is provided by Manageengine,

After installing the MIB browser, please follow the below steps to perform SNMP walk,

Step 1: Configuring community string or Credentials

Click on settings icon --> Choose the SNMP version

For V1 and V2 you can provide the community string directly right below the hostname.

For V3 you will have to add the credentials and the protocol as shown in the below image,

Click on Apply and Ok

Step 2: Performing the SNMP walk

Once after adding the credentials enter the hostname and provide OID as .1 or .iso.
Click on SNMP walk icon,

As soon as you click on the walk icon it would start fetching the device information.
In the fetched data, look for the information you are trying to find.

For example: In the above image if I am looking for the OID of my VPN adapter, then OID which is across my adapter name is the ID I need,
