Windows v Linux

I have a PC that has a CPU running at 2.66 Ghz, it has 2GB ram and a 37GB HD.

I have available Windows XP2 or RedHat linux 9.

Which would be better to run and would get the most out of the hardware?

If Linux, is there actually a better Linux version to use?
