User Reply to a merged ticket opens a new ticket

When two requests are merged, the newer request is deleted after being merged. Currently, if the user replies to an email from the newer request (the acknowledgement email, for example) it opens a new ticket.
For example: Bob submits the initial request (##100##). He forgets he has sent this and two days later sends the same request again (##101##). Support staff merge the tickets. Bob's wife remembers something and replies to the acknowledgement of ##101#. A new request, ##102##, is created; a
ny email that is sent with the ##101## in the subject will open a new request, as ##101## no longer exists.
This is confusing to users.
Is it possible to change this behaviour so that future correspondence is appended to the merged request rather then opening a new ticket? If not, I'd ask that this be considered as a future enhancement.
