5.5.0 Backup Process

Is the backup process different in 5.5.0?

It appears to have some different logic and I need to know if it is still required to shut down the service before backing up--or can the backup go while the service is running.

I would like to be able to back up the system without having to shut it down--which would allow for multiple snapshot periods during the work day.
