Scenarios in which multiple Notification Profiles need to be created

When a fault is detected in your network, an event occurs and multiple events correlate to trigger an alarm. You can configure OpManager to notify the network administrator or perform automatic actions based on the alarm raised for a device, using the Notification Profiles.

Sometimes slightly different actions need to be carried out for the same/similar alarms. In such cases, the actions cannot be carried out by a single Notification Profile. In this scenario, different Notification Profiles need to be created for the different actions needed.

Below are some frequently occurring scenarios:

  1. When different Notification Profile types are needed.

Example: This can occur when the criteria, and other configurations of the Notification Profile are the same but the user wants to be notified by email in certain situations and by sms in others. In this case, an Email Notification Profile and SMS Notification Profile need to be created separately.

  1. When the user wants to notify different individuals for different criteria/severity:

Example: When you want the notification to go to different personnel based on the severity or criteria of the alarm raised, but otherwise, the overall Notification Profile is more or less the same. This can occur when the user wants only one individual to know when the severity of the alarm is 'trouble' but wants the manager to be notified if the alarm severity becomes 'critical'. In this scenario, two different Notification Profiles have to be created, one for when the alarm severity is 'trouble' and the other for when the severity is 'critical'.

  1. When the Time Window for the Notification Profile is different:

Example: This scenario occurs when the user wants a Notification Profile to be applied 24x7 on weekend and only during a two hour interval in the weekdays. In this scenario, two different Notification Profiles need to be created for the different time windows.

  1. When the Recurring/Delayed Trigger intervals need to be different:

Example: This can occur in the scenario where the same notification is needed for an alert but the interval between Recurring or Delayed trigger for notification varies for different persons. In this scenario, different Notification Profiles need to be created for different Recurring/Delayed Trigger intervals.

Note: Multiple Notification Profiles are not needed when the Notification Profile needs to be associated for more devices. In this scenario, you can edit the existing Notification Profile to include more devices. Having duplicate profiles may increase the application load and may in turn cause performance issues.
