Licensing FAQ

Licensing FAQ

What is a Monitor?

A monitor is any specific application or server instance within your environment that you monitor in Applications Manager. For example, if you monitor 100 SQL server installations, your monitor count will be 100 (or) if you monitor 50 windows servers, your monitor count will be 50.

Applications Manager supports 80+ Monitor types. You can view the full list of supported monitor types here.

A monitor is different from a performance metric.
A performance metric is an attribute that is part of a monitor.

Consider the Apache web server that is used by http://www.manageengine.com/products/applications_manager/index.html. This monitor (Apache web server) may have 'N' number of performance metrics exposed. For information on what performance metrics you can see for an Apache Monitor, refer Apache Monitoring.

Note: The total number of monitors in your Applications Manager installation includes the monitors that are added by default when you install the product. These default monitors will not be considered while calculating the number of monitors for licensing purposes.

Is CPU Utilization or Response Time a monitor?

No, they are performance metrics. For licensing, the server or web server is considered as a Monitor. CPU Utilization, Response Time etc., are Performance Metrics of a Server Monitor.

Can I purchase a Perpetual License (a one-time payment License) ?

Yes, you can buy Perpetual License instead of Annual Subscription. Please contact sales@manageengine.com to know more.

Where do I get to see the total number of monitors?

For getting the total number of monitors

  • Click on the About link on top right hand corner of the Applications Manager console, you can see the number of monitors configured.
  • Click on Monitors tab, under category view, you can see the total number of monitors configured.
  • Click Support tab, under Installation Information, you can view the total number of monitors you are entitled to.

If you do not want a particular monitor to be included for licensing count, you can unmanage it (data collection will not take place). More information on Manage / UnManage option from Help Document. While unmanaging a monitor, monitor count will not decrement but will remain the same in Category view. The list of Managed and Unmanaged monitors can be viewed from Bulk Config View. If you have a license of 250 monitors and in Bulk configuration page, you have less than 250 monitors under Managed category then you can add new monitors. Unmanaged monitors will not be taken in for licensing count.

Note: The total number of monitors, will include the monitors that we add by default for AppManager Database,Server,URL, Tomcat & Port. These default monitors will not be taken into account while calculating the number of monitors for Licensing.

What do you mean by number of users?

It is the number of users who will need to access the Product Web Client.

I downloaded the Free Edition (I get to test five monitors-fulltime).But I now want to test other monitors too, how do I get a professional edition evaluation license (unlimited number of monitors-30 days)?

Go to Support Tab of Application Manager from the browser and under License Information table there will be a link Evaluate. Once you click on that link, you will be able to add unlimited monitors and users for 30 days. Your free edition now becomes evaluation version. After 30 days, it automatically changes to Free Edition.

Why do I need an additional user license?

A multi-user environment allows more than one user to simultaneously login to the Web Console. Additionally, you can make use of the various roles like 'Operator', 'Manager' and 'Read Only User' to have more control over - which users see what data.

What is the difference between Professional Edition and Enterprise Edition?

Enterprise Edition has all features of the Professional Edition. The core difference is :

  • Higher scalability. It has the ability to provide a single console for over 1000 monitors by supporting a distributed architecture (Central Admin Server along with many Managed Servers -probes). There is no separate pricing for Managed Servers.
  • Ability to provide a single console for applications and servers being monitored in multiple restricted networks. HTTP(s) access is sufficient across these networks.
  • Failover Support is available only in Enterprise Edition

Checkout the Professional Edition Pricing and also the Enterprise Edition pricing.

"DatabaseServer" may have any number of databases, will it still be considered as one monitor?

MySQL, IBM DB2, MS SQL database servers will have many databases running within. Irrespective of the databases running, each database server will be considered as one monitor. But Oracle will have different instances of the database, hence each instance of Oracle will be considered as a separate monitor.

How do I enable Monitor Add-on(s)?

Monitor Add on comes bundled in the product itself (No separate download). After buying a monitor Add-on license, for example - SAP Add on, if you apply the license, SAP Monitor will be enabled. Contact appmanager-support@manageengine.com for buying monitor Add-On. You can view the list of Add ons provided with Applications Manager here.

How do I use Network Monitoring Connector Add-on?

The OpManager Network Monitoring Connector AddOn helps you monitor performance of your network devices along with WAN link availability using a related product ManageEngine OpManager. This add-on is especially useful for those who have bought both Applications Manager and OpManager. Upon purchasing Network Monitoring Connector add-on, you can simply activate it from Admin tab in Applications Manager. Once activated, you can use this add-on to import network devices from OpManager.

I have a service running on a server; will it be considered as two monitors?

It depends on what you want to monitor. If you want to monitor the service alone, then only that will be considered as a monitor, the system on which the service is running will not be monitored. But incase you want to monitor both the system and the service that it is running on it, then both (system & service) will be considered as two different entities and so calculated as two monitors. Here service is any process with a TCP Port. However, Windows Services (eg. Terminial Services, COM+ Event System etc) is monitored as part of the Windows Server Monitor itself.

Do I have to pay for Applications Manager database license?

No, Applications Manager comes bundled with a database (only with Mysql). Hence you do not have to buy database license for using Applications Manager.
