How to upgrade ADSelfService Plus in a high availability environment

Objective

This article explains how to successfully upgrade ADSelfService Plus in a high availability (HA) environment, ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining configuration integrity across both primary and standby servers.

Prerequisites

Before initiating the upgrade, ensure you meet the following requirements:
  • Access: Access to both the primary and standby servers where ADSelfService Plus is installed.
  • Service pack file: A valid ADSelfService Plus service pack file (e.g., ManageEngine_ADSelfService_Plus_x_x_SP-x_x_x.ppm) must be downloaded and readily available on both servers.
  • Administrator privileges: Administrator privileges on both the primary and standby servers to execute the update process.
  • Backup: Crucially, perform a complete backup of your ADSelfService Plus application directory and database on both servers before initiating the update. This enables data recovery in case of unforeseen issues.

Steps to follow

Step 1: Shut down both servers
  1. Shut down both the primary and standby servers.
Step 2: Apply the update on the primary server
  1. Navigate to the <installation_directory>\bin (default path: C:\Program Files\ManageEngine\ADSelfService Plus\bin).
  2. Right-click UpdateManager.bat and select Run as administrator.
  3. In the Update Manager window, click Browse and select the downloaded service pack file (.ppm).
  4. Click Install. The update process will begin and may take several minutes, depending on the size of the update and your data.
Info Note: Do not terminate or interrupt the update process once it has started, doing so can lead to an incomplete or corrupted installation.
  1. Once the update is complete, click Close and exit the Update Manager.
Step 3: Apply the update on the standby server
  1. Repeat the same steps on your standby server.
  2. Ensure the same service pack is applied to the standby server using the same process mentioned above.
Step 4: Start the servers in order
  1. First, start ADSelfService Plus on the primary server.
  2. Once the primary server is fully up, running, and accessible, start the ADSelfService Plus service on the standby server.
