How to enable the jTDS JDBC Driver option for Microsoft SQL Server monitoring

Steps to enable the jTDS JDBC Driver option

The option is controlled by the key am.mssql.hide.driver.option in the AM_GLOBALCONFIG table.

  1. Stop Applications Manager.
  2. Connect to the Applications Manager database (PostgreSQL / MS SQL back-end) using the bundled DB client or any SQL tool.
  3. Run:
    UPDATE AM_GLOBALCONFIG SET VALUE = 'false' WHERE KEY = 'am.mssql.hide.driver.option';

    (Column names may be quoted depending on your back-end. If the row does not exist, insert it with the same key and value.)

  4. Start Applications Manager. A restart is required because the value is cached at startup.
  5. The Driver for SQL Server Connection field now appears in the Add/Edit Monitor pages, Query Monitor, Self Help Tools, Credential Manager, and driverType=jtdsjdbcdriver is accepted by the REST API and Bulk Import.

To hide the option again, set the value back to true and restart.

Notes

  • Microsoft JDBC Driver is recommended for better performance and continued support; use jTDS only where a specific environment requires it.
  • Hiding the option does not change existing monitors. Monitors already configured with jTDS continue to use it; the setting only controls what can be chosen for new or edited monitors.
  • In an Enterprise Edition setup, the key must be set on each Managed Server (probe) where MS SQL monitors are added.
