How to automatically discover the new devices added to my network?

Discovery Schedule

You can set up a discovery schedule to automatically discover the new devices added to your network. To create a discovery schedule,

For OpManager versions 125174 and above

  • Go to Settings -> Discovery.
  • In the Network Discovery page, click on the New Discovery option on the top right corner.
  • Enter the required IP range, select the necessary credentials and initiate the discovery process.
  • In the following page, Approve or Reject the discovered devices. The approved devices will be monitored and the ignored devices will be discarded from future discovery scans.
  • Once the devices are discovered, return to the Network Discovery page, select the appropriate Discovery Profile and click on the Schedule icon.
  • Define the frequency at which you would like to re-run the process (Once/Daily/Weekly/Monthly/Yearly).
  • If needed, configure email notification to notify the discovery changes and click on Save.

For OpManager versions below 125174

  • Go to Settings -> Discovery.
  • Enter the required IP range (or select any other discovery method), select the necessary credentials, select discovery rules if needed and navigate to the Schedule section.
  • In the schedule section, define the frequency at which you would like to re-run the discovery schedule and click on Save and Execute.
OpManager will now run the discovery schedule in the specified time and the newly discovered devices will be automatically added to OpManager. In case a discovery filter is applied during initial discovery, OpManager will add/ignore the devices based on the condition configured in the filter during the process of Scheduled Discovery.

Re-Discovery Rule:

If the Discovery Schedule is configured to repeat at the given frequency (every hour, every day, weekly, etc), you will also need to select the action to be carried out automatically at the time of rediscovery. Re-Discovery rule enables you to configure OpManager to perform the specified action when a device is added/removed during the process of rediscovery.

  • If a new device is found: Action to be performed when a new device is discovered in the given IP range.
  • If a device is removed: Action to be performed when an existing device is removed.
  • If new Interface is found: Action to be performed when a new Interface is been found in the network.
  • If an Interface is removed: Action to be performed when a existing Interface is removed.

Note: The Re-Discovery rule can be applied only if the schedule is configured to occur more than once.

Auto VM Discovery

Businesses with large vCenter environment will have the necessity to expand or modify their servers according to their business needs. In such cases, addition and removal of VM servers and other related components are mandatory.  Auto VM Discovery in OpManager enables you to track and update the changes in your vCenter environment. Any new VM machines added to your network will be automatically mapped and added to OpManagerHow do I enable/diable VM discovery?

Discovery via Trap

SNMP traps are cryptic messages or alerts sent from a SNMP device. Traps are sent by the SNMP agent when there is a change in its environment such as hardware changes, login failure, patch upgrade, new client connectivity, etc. If these traps are redirected to the OpManager server, the devices sending them will be automatically discovered/added into OpManager when the Discover devices via trap option is enabled.

To enable trap based discovery in OpManager,

    • Go to  Settings -> Discovery -> Discovery Settings.
    • Enable the Discover devices via trap option.
    • Save the changes. Once enabled, the traps from new sources will be received and automatically discovered in OpManager
