Error in creating Exchange mailbox; a legacy mailbox is created instead

ADManager Plus allows you to create Exchange mailboxes for AD users, right while creating AD accounts or later, in multiple versions of Exchange Server, from the same window. However, you might encounter some issues sometimes during the Exchange mailbox creation operations. This is more often than not just because of a few basic prerequisites not being satisfied or lack of sufficient privileges to create mailboxes.

Possible reason:

Issues in creating Exchange mailboxes using ADManager Plus could be because of either permission issues or the prerequisites not being met.

Resolution:

Based on the version of the Exchange Server you are using, ensure the following.

If you are using Exchange Server 2007  :

  • 64-bit Edition of ADManager Plus must be installed on a compatible machine.

  • The corresponding version of Exchange Management Console (EMC) must be installed on the same machine where ADManager Plus is installed.

  • The user account provided in the Domain Settings of ADManager Plus must be the member of the Exchange Organization Administrator group.

If you are using Exchange Server 2010 and above:

  • The user account configured in ADManager Plus' Domain Settings must:

  • Have Remote PowerShell enabled for it.

  • Be a member of the Organization Management or the Recipient Management group.

  • TCP port 80 must be open between the machine hosting the ADManager Plus server and the Exchange server for remote PowerShell connectivity.
