Issue description
When attempting to access file shares in ManageEngine ADAudit Plus, the following error message is displayed:
Error in getting Shares. The network path was not found. Error Code: 35
This error usually indicates that the ADAudit Plus server is unable to reach the target file server or the configured account lacks permissions to retrieve share information.
Prerequisites
Ensure the following before troubleshooting:
ADAudit Plus server has network connectivity to the file server.
You have access to the configured service account used in ADAudit Plus.
The file server is resolvable using DNS (either flat name or FQDN).
Shared Folders Snap-in is enabled in Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on the ADAudit Plus server.
Possible causes
The ADAudit Plus server cannot resolve or reach the file server using its flat name.
DNS resolution is failing due to missing DNS suffix or host entry.
The service account does not have adequate privileges to retrieve share information.
The configured domain credentials in ADAudit Plus are incorrect or lack access rights.
Resolution
Step 1: Verify server connectivity
From the ADAudit Plus server, open Command Prompt.
Ping the file server using its flat name: ping <FILESERVERNAME>
Outcome:
If the ping fails, but works with the FQDN, take one of the following actions:
Add a host entry for the file server in the ADAudit Plus server (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts).
Create a DNS alias (CNAME) for the flat name in your DNS.
Add a DNS suffix in ADAudit Plus server’s network adapter settings to resolve flat names automatically.
If the issue persists after DNS correction, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Confirm share access with configured account
Verify access Using MMC
Log in to the ADAudit Plus server using the same service account configured in ADAudit Plus.
Launch Microsoft Management Console (MMC):
Go to File > Add/Remove Snap-In.
Select Shared Folders > Click Add.
Choose Another Computer, then enter the file server name.
Attempt to view the shared folders.
Outcome:
If the shares are not accessible, the service account might lack privileges to retrieve share info.
Account privileges check
ADAudit Plus uses the account configured under:
Domain Settings > Configured Domain > Modify Credentials
If this account lacks the required permissions, Error Code 35 might occur.
Resolution options
Configure a Domain Admin account for accessing file shares under Domain Settings.
Alternatively, use a minimum-privilege service account, ensuring it has:
Remote access to shared folders
Read permissions on shares
Refer to the privilege requirements in Service Account Configuration Guide.
