We have a 2k3 server where the WMI checks are failing.  We've gone through and tried different credentials, made sure that the WMI Control permission sets on the server mirror identically those of a twin server where WMI works, and there is no firewall between the machines (telnet verifies the ports 135 and 445 are open)
