Windows Laptops: Mobile Device Manager - Locked Out

I removed several Windows (Azure Autopilot) "Awaiting User Assignment" devices from the Mobile Device Mgmt Enrollment inventory thinking this would just remove the computers from Manage Engine. 

After doing so, users who were able to login to these computers were unable to do so.  They received errors that their password/pin was no long valid.  Also, it appears these computers were removed from Azure Active Directory as well. 

I restored a backup, and the devices are now back in inventory, but the laptops are still locked out.

I'm somewhat surprised this had any impact on the users as there was NO policies configured or published.  These laptops were just in a "pending" state and we didn't want to have ManageEngine manage them through the Mobile Device module.

Help/guidance is appreciated.
