Users unable to log in

We've had self service working for a couple years now.  Users suddenly having issues logging in

They go to the self service portal, webpage load, everything is fine.

Enter their AD username and password.

Text appears above the username field saying "Loading... Please wait"

after about a minute, the login fails.  That section of the page gets a big ugly box saying "This Page can't be displayed"
