User Notification Email Configuration Non-AD

I enable to send a warning mail to the desktop user and, during testing, am trying to use "Use email id configured manually". Per the help pop-up, I go to Admin > Feed Custom Data for Computers to set up the custom email address. I open the "Add / Modify Computer Details" pop-up for [someComputer]. I fill out the data with test data and a valid email address in "Owner Email ID", but after saving, the "Owner Email" field remains "--" next the [someComputer] while the other fields have been updated. Opening the edit window again shows the "Owner Email ID" has reverted to "--".

Does "Owner Email ID" correspond to an ID stored somewhere (AD, perhaps) and not the actual email address? I would expect any valid email to work.

The "Primary owner" field lists a local non-AD user with (as far as I know) no email address in the AD.

Also, how often is this this email notification sent? Everytime a user logs into the machine with prohibited software? Once? Once per user (when set to pull email from AD)?
