Upgrading to version 7 from 5

We are going to move to SD+ version 7 in the near future. We would like to install version 7 onto a new server as well.
What would be the best process for this upgrade? Would it be best to install version 7 on the new server, then just restore the backups from version 5 to version 7? would this work?
if not could you please provide details on the best way to migrate to a new server with version 7.
