Upgrading from 7913 to 7920 - repeated failures

Hi,
  We're contacting you after our third failed attempt to upgrade 7913 in the hope that you'll be able to help and this post will subsequently help other users.
 
  The first thing I'd like to know is whether it's possible to do an upgrade without the system running a full backup beforehand?  Our system is hosted on a virtual machine running MS SQL 2008, therefore there really is no need for your application to spend 2 1/2 to 3 hours trying to do a backup for each upgrade (we have to go through two in order to get to 7920 - another frustration we have!).
 
  In case it helps, we've been using the system for a few years now so our install is found in the older C:\Advent Net\ME\SupportCenter folder structure.
 
  We've established that the first failure occurs when a file already exists which has the same name as a folder the upgrade tries to create, but we've not had the chance to debug the second error due to the aforementioned 2 1/2 hour+ backup which each upgrade does, meaning we've had to roll the system back to a stable known state before our business comes back online.
 
  We're happy to debug the problem ourselves and/or get you guys involved at assisting, but only if there's a way to prevent the backups from occurring - if this has to be done each time, we'll have to review our process and find another way to get this system upgraded - all suggestions appreciated...
