upgrade from 6014 to 7018 and move to new server

in the last week i build a new server to move service desk 6014 from an older server to this new server and then to test the upgrade.
the move from old to new server on version 6014 worked fine. i ran into a problem where some of my asset names were too long which caused the upgrade to version 7 to fail (service desk support helped me out with this one, thank you!)
after modifying the asset names i upgraded to version 7 and then to 7018 (just read 7019 came out
) and this is now working and am trying to get to grips with the new gui and layouts.
i ran into the same issue other user had were certain items were classified as workstations or printers and some of the product categories i had were missing (printer toners for instance became just printers and laptop accessories became just laptops) i have manually recreated the missing product categories and have moved roughly 100 products to the correct category.
so far so good.
in version 6 i used our asset tag labels as the unique identifier for all my assets, and as many other people did i linked these assets to workstations (servers, desktops and laptops)
in version 7 this has changed slightly and i am not sure how to deal with this,
workstations, is that supposed to be just desktops and laptops and do you use servers for servers? that is how i have got it configured right now. but when i look at the assets and select workstations the server "old" server / workstations are listed as well but the dropdown menu only lets you sub-categorise it in desktops or laptops and not servers??
finally i have the issue that the asset tags for the server, desktop and laptop are listed and these have all the correct purchasing, warranty expiry and pricing in them but i also have the workstation netbios names (with the ms windows icon) listed separately (without the correct purchasing etc info)
i cannot figure out how to merge these 2 types, (remember i used asset tags as the unique identifier)
i have read other post were people had similar issues but have not seen a solution, perhaps i missed it as the search functionality on this forum isn't the best
