Unexpected and inconsistent basic authentication prompts

Unexpected and inconsistent basic authentication prompts

When accessing ADSelfService from OS X (domain-joined or otherwise), I see basic authentication prompts (screenshot below) in Chrome (27.0.1453.93 and Firefox (20). Safari (6.0.4) acts like it's trying to load the login page, but it never appears and I don't see a basic auth prompt.

In Chrome, it doesn't matter what I enter in the basic auth prompt (ADSelfService credentials or enrolled AD user credentials). The prompt reappears several times, but finally the following message appears, and I can't get to the ADSelfService login fields.

In Firefox, I can enter anything (including bogus credentials) in the basic authentication prompt, or leave the basic authentication prompt blank and click OK. The prompt disappears, and I can enter my account information on the ADSelfService login page.

On a domain-joined Windows 7 PC, Chrome and IE 8 act normally, but Firefox (19.0.2) shows a basic authentication prompt. Again, I can just click OK or enter anything in the basic authentication prompt to get to the ADSelfService login page.

On a workgroup Windows 8 PC in Chrome (27.0.1453.94 m) I see the same behavior as in Chrome on OS X. In IE 10, I see a basic authentication prompt, and if I enter my AD credentials, the prompt disappears and I'm taken to the ADSelfService login page. In Firefox (21), I can enter anything in the basic auth prompt and the ADSelfService login page appears.

What can I do to suppress / stop the basic authentication prompt across browsers and platforms for all systems (domain-joined or workgroup) on our network? The primary need for ADSelfService is password changes for byod users. Most of these users won't have domain-joined computers. In case it matters, ADSelfService is running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

Thanks in advance!
