I'm trying to get a more accurate view into the vast network that my company manages. Many of its systems reside on the other end of satellite links, and we are trying to develop a centralized system to monitor the remote systems.
One topic that has been brought up is the increased accuracy of UDP pings. We usually have PingPlotter running in the background, and it provides the option of doing UDP (Unix-like) pings, instead of the regular ICMP ECHO_REQUEST and ECHO_REPLY. I talked to AdventNet this morning to see if OpManager supported such a configuration, but they said nobody has asked about this before.
Has anyone else dealt with this? Am I incorrect in stating that UDP pings will be more accurate, because they are given a higher priority than ICMP packets, which are typically at the bottom of the QoS list?
