Voice over Internet Protocol

Definition — What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It can also be referred to as IP telephony or internet telephony. At the simplest level, VoIP phones use hardware and software to handle telephone calls using VoIP technology. The traditional method for domestic and business telephone systems used the legacy technology of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). In VoIP telephone systems the voice signal is digitized at the phone and sent as packet data using Internet Protocol and there is no need for PSTN. VoIP provides many new features and services that are available to all sized businesses. Some VoIP features include call forwarding, caller ID, voicemail, SMS, and video calls, on-hold music, IVR, and many more features.

You just need to have a good quality internet connection, to make voice calls through VoIP from your smartphones, Laptops instead of using the landline phones.

Here are the most common examples of VoIP apps:
  • Nextiva
  • Skype
  • WhatsApp
  • Google Hangouts
  • Viber
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Google Voice
In general phone service via VoIP costs less than traditional phone line service which helps businesses grow.
