"Semantic Web"

Definition — What is Semantic Web?

Semantic Web, an extension of the World Wide Web (WWW) in which data are given well-defined meaning (semantics), better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.

In 2001, Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, published a new illuminating article in the Scientific American. Berners-Lee, along with two other researchers, Ora Lassila and James Hendler wanted to give the world a preview of the revolutionary new changes they saw coming to the web.

The Semantic Web

"A new form of web content that is meaningful to computers will unleash a revolution of new possibilities" — Tim Berners-Lee.

Imagine you are planning a trip to Paris, you will probably need to search several different sites for airlines, hotels, museums and other tourist attractions. Imagine if an intelligent software agent could do that for you – wouldn't that make the task simpler?

The ultimate ambition of the Semantic Web, as its founder Tim Berners-Lee sees it, is to enable computers to better manipulate information on our behalf.
