What is RFID?

RFID, the acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification, is a form of wireless communication that uses radio waves to identify and find objects.

These radio waves transmit data from a transmitter (tag) to an RFID computer program through a receiver (reader). RFID tags, sometimes referred to as RFID chips are frequently used for merchandise, but they can also be used to track goods, assets, vehicles, pets, and so on.

Some of the major benefits of RFID over barcode scanning are:

  • More than one tag can be scanned simultaneously simply by holding the scanner over the tags.
  • Distant tags can be scanned.
  • Tags in a box can be scanned.
  • Tags with a stained surface can be read.
