Definition — What is PuTTY?

PuTTY is a free open source terminal emulator that supports multiple network protocols such as SSH, SCP, and rlogin network protocols. The word PuTTY has no official meaning, it was developed and maintained primarily by Simon Tatham, a British programmer. PuTTY development began late in 1998 and was a usable SSH-2 client by October 2000. PuTTY was originally written for Microsoft Windows operating system, it was most famously used for SSH to connects from Windows systems to Unix-based systems. Later it has been ported to various other operating systems. It is also a popular tool for text-based communication.

PuTTY provides some distinct advantages, especially when working remotely. It is easier to configure and is more stable. It is also more persistent in comparison to other tools, as a remote session can be resumed as soon as the connection is restored after an interruption. It has an easy-to-use graphical user interface. Although PuTTY is still a beta (pre-production) release, PuTTY is full-featured and its terminal emulation is good. The latest version of PuTTY is 0.74, it's a small installation file of just a few MBs, you can easily install it on multiple operating systems like Windows, Linux, etc.
