“Personally Identifiable Information”
Definition — What is PII and its purpose?
Personally Identifiable Information (PII) - Is any information (eg: Passport information) that permits to uniquely identify, contact
or locate an individual, or can be used in a tandem with other relevant data (e.g., date of birth and race) to uniquely identify a person.
The concept of PII has become prevalent as information technology and the Internet has made it easier to collect PII leading to a profitable market in collecting and reselling PII.
PII can also be exploited by criminals to stalk or steal the identity of a person, or to aid in the planning of criminal acts such as creating bogus accounts in the person's name, incur debt, create a falsified passport and so on.
Examples of PII include:
• First or last name (if common)
• Date of birth
• Country, state or city of residence
• Credit/Debit card numbers
• Age
• Telephone numbers
• Email addresses
• Gender
• Race
• Financial information
• Driver's License
