Definition — What is human augmentation? 


The term Human Augmentation is often used in the same context as human enhancement, it's an important research field with a view to the future society in which computer technology such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Robotics, etc. are highly integrated. Human augmentation is not just a research to make humans much stronger and they are now designed to assist people’s daily activities. One of the simplest human augmentation examples will be spectacles, this might sound like a primitive technology, but it has been enhancing the human body for a long time, helping people see better, other examples are:

  • The company Naked Prosthetics, for instance, can replicate amputated fingers with extremely high dexterity
  • eSight is a wearable device with cameras that allows legally blind individuals to see their environment by displaying images on a screen very close to the eye
  • Cochlear implants work similarly to recreate hearing. 

Around the world today, millions of people are already engaging with forms of human augmentation to improve their lives and help their bodies function better. Augmentative technologies will have a transformative influence on broad social, political, and economic spheres, affecting the future of the sport, labor productivity, human longevity, and disability.
