Haptic Technology

Definition — What is Haptic Technology?

The word haptic is derived from the Greek "haptikos" it refers to the sense of touch, the sense felt by humans upon touching an object. Haptic technology aims to simulate the sensation of touch with various mechanisms. One of them is using touch as a feedback system to communicate information to and from the user. Haptic technology is everywhere. Even though you might not know it, there is a good chance you are already using haptic technology in your daily life. The small vibration of a cell phone in response to a touch event is an example of haptic feedback at work. The resistance of a joystick that controls a fighter jet, as it provides tactile feedback to the pilot, is another example of haptic feedback.

Haptic technologies were first developed and introduced in the 1970s. The first use of a haptic device was in large modern aircraft that relied on servomechanism systems to operate control systems.

Haptic Technology in various fields:

  • Cellular Devices: Haptic technology is gaining popularity in the mobile consumer technology field, where it is used to provide features such as vibration feedback on smartphone touch screens.
  • Virtual Reality: Haptics are picking up tremendous support as an important section of virtual reality frameworks. Haptic interfaces can enhance the virtual environment interaction by enabling users to “touch” and “feel” virtual objects that are simulated in the environment.
  • Aircraft Simulation: This technology can also be used in the areas where a human cannot be given to operate a system without the experience of it before such as flying an aircraft. Under such a situation, haptic technology can give feedback similar to the real experience and hence help in the learning experience of a pilot.
  • Gaming: A major eye turner would be the application of haptics in the gaming world. By designing a suitable suit or a glove or any such sensor which is suitable for the game, the gaming experience can be made real. The future of the gaming world will be taken over by the haptics soon as this can not only display the images but also give tactile feedback to the user.
