Definition — What is ESN?

Enterprise Social Networking (ESN) is also known as Corporate Social Networking. Social networking sites started to form in the early 1990s, with popular sites like theGlobe.com and Geocities at the forefront. These early sites shaped the way we communicate with communities online, driving a people-forward look at the internet. ESN provides organizations with an internal social media platform that allows employees to connect with each other, communicate and collaborate through a range of social media tools such as discussion threads, social feeds, and blogs. ESN also allows employees to message directly or in groups, share posts and updates, join groups, and much more. Social media has been growing in prominence since 2000. The world now has 4.83 billion active social media users with an increased rate of 17% each year. Social media has become a critical marketing and communication tool for companies of all sizes. One of the key benefits of using ESN in an organization can drastically reduce the clutter in email inboxes. Instead, employees can have a quick and clear discussion in real-time, in the public forum, or in a private discussion. ESN is a vital component of an organization to enhance communication and business processes.
