Empowered edge, also referred to as edge cloud is an architecture where "edge" refers to the endpoint devices that users are using.
The description "Empowered edge" comes from a computing topology in which information, content collection and delivery are processed in close proximity to its source to benefit from low-latency, and also to optimize the end-to-end network utilization for massively data intensive scenarios.
The key benefit to the empowered edge is that by keeping traffic and processing local, the network reduces a central clog that can lead to digital inertia and many believe this could become a dominant factor and surpass the use of cloud computing within a decade.
Though cloud computing is cost-effective, with billions of devices connected to the internet, faster and more reliable data processing will become crucial. The rise of IoT and mobile computing has put a strain on networking bandwidth or how much data can be transferred across a network in a given period of time.
Gartner estimates that by 2025, 75% of data will be processed outside the traditional data center or cloud.
