Definition — What is Eavesdropping Attack?

Eavesdropping attack, also known as network eavesdropping, snooping attack, or sniffing attack, is an electronic attack where digital communications are intercepted by an individual whom they are not intended. In layman's terms, eavesdropping means spying on somebody’s information without their permission.

This attack occurs when data is transmitted over an unsecured network by a computer, smartphone and other digital devices. These attacks tend to be successful too because no abnormalities can be identified in the network transmissions which makes it difficult to detect.

This is carried out in two main ways:

i) Directly listening to digital or analog voice communication
ii) Intercepting or sniffing of data relating to any form of communication.

For example, Voice over IP (VoIP) calls made using IP-based communication can be picked up and recorded using protocol analyzers and then converted to audio files using other specialized software.

This attack can be used to capture everything from important passwords to credit card details, login credentials and other sensitive personal information so this is something that both businesses and individuals need to take seriously.
