Definition — What is a Cookie? 



In the world of computer technology, The term "Cookie" is also called a web cookie, Internet cookie, browser cookie, or HTTP cookie. The cookies were developed for the first time in 1994 by Lou Montulli along with John Giannandrea.


Cookie got its name from the term "magic cookie", which is a packet of data a program receives and sends back unchanged, used by Unix programmers. Cookies are usually small text files designed for websites to remember information about your website activities and store them on your hard disk for a later time ( More technically, it is information for future use that is stored by the server on the client-side.) Cookies are used by websites for a variety of purposes and most commonly used to:

1. Store and maintain user preferences on a website.

2. Remembers the contents of your shopping cart.

3. Remembers text that you have entered in a form.

4. Stores data that help a website work properly.

5. Helps in implementing security measures on a website.

6. Keeps track of visitor counts.

7. Provide users with easier access to accounts.


Cookies can also do some complicated jobs such as tracking you as you surf around the internet. They can gather information about your habits and preferences, and this information can be used to deliver tailored advertising. It is important to remember that the cookies are not the ones that perform these functions, they are not codes or programmed they are designed to store the browser activates.
