Content Management System

Definition — What is CMS?

CMS stands for the Content Management System. CMS is a software that helps you create, edit, delete, and manage content for your website using a user-friendly interface, rather than needing to work directly with the code. CMS makes managing a web-based application or website much easier for users of all technical levels. Content management also ensures that whatever content you have is indexable or searchable, making it easy for users to find accurate information.

The two main components of CMS are:
  • Content Management Application (CMA) - Allows content managers or users ( who are unfamiliar with HTML or coding) to manage the creation and editing of the content without the need of a Web developer.
  • Content Delivery Application (CDA) - Acts as the back-end portion of the website, using and compiling content for website updates.
Content management systems are very relevant to knowledge management (KM). In HelpDesk sectors, knowledge management plays a key role with a structured repository, It generally contains a collection of data related to the product. The collective data can be in different forms like Videos, Articles, Blogs, FAQ's Etc.

Content management and knowledge management are often used interchangeably. But distinguishing between the two is necessary, as businesses need both to streamline internal operations and establish consistency in their message. Both Content and Knowledge management in businesses are important components of successful user experience.
