Content Delivery Network

Definition — What is a CDN?

Content Delivery Network (CDN) also know as Content Distribution Network is a huge collection of distributed servers that are strategically placed across the globe to handle increased traffic loads and  to reduce the time of content delivery for the user from servers. The first CDN was launched in 1998 by Akamai Technologies soon after the public internet was created. The content found in the websites of today contains a variety of formats such as text, scripts, documents, images, software, media files, live streaming media and on-demand streaming media, and so on. In order to deliver such diverse content to users across the globe efficiently, CDNs are deployed in data centers. CDNs accelerate website performance and provide numerous benefits for users and also for the network infrastructure.

CDNs provide web content services by duplicating content from other servers and directing it to users from the nearest data center. The shortest possible route between a user and the webserver is determined by the CDN based on factors such as speed, latency, proximity, availability, and so on. A CDN allows all users, no matter the geographical location, to have fast loading content for an unquestionably improved experience. According to BuiltWith, close to 45% of the top 1 million websites are using a CDN. This percentage has continually increased over the last 10 years due to the large growth of digital content consumption and high user expectations.

Utilizing a CDN is one of the most effective ways to deliver content with high performance and reliability on a global scale. In addition to performance advantages, CDNs reduce bandwidth demands on a website’s origin server, which helps reduce costs, cut down on service interruptions, and provide better defense against threats like DDoS attacks.
