Definition — What is Clickbait?

The term Clickbait or Link bait is a form of false advertisement online. It comes in the form of a link you can find on websites, usually accompanied by a sensationalist headline or a thumbnail link designed to attract attention and entice users to follow the link. After clicking, users will quickly realize the article isn’t at all what it claimed to be. It might contain information that’s only slightly connected to the headline. Worse yet, it could be full of misinformation from non-credible sources. Currently, clickbait is often characterized by wording like, “You won’t believe” or “What happened next will shock you,” or other unverifiable assertions but then fails to deliver on the user’s implicit expectations. Even worse, clickbait helps spread fake news. When people see a headline that excites or interests them, they’re likely to share it on social media. They may read the article and not realize it contains misinformation. Some might not even click and read the article. They simply believe what the headline says and want to share it with others.

However, this practice can become very useful if you know how to use it correctly. If the clicks land on good articles of your website and as long as they aren’t detracting from the truth, it will greatly contribute to getting more clicks, more traffic, and interactions with the audience to generate engagements.
