Definition — What does Blade Server mean?

When discussing data centers, the term blade server, also known as high density server often comes up as well.

Blade servers were developed to offer an alternative to traditional rack servers that enable one rack mount unit to hold a densely packed rack of blade-shaped, modular servers (referred to as an "enclosure") that can be added and removed according to demand.

Many organizations have started preferring blade-based over traditional rack-based systems due to space constraints, reduced energy costs and several other factors. It can be easily upgraded or repaired due to its design that allows a server blade to be easily slid in and out of an enclosure bay. Inserting a new server blade is much quicker than mounting a 1U rack server and also instantly connects the blade to the common services provided by the enclosure.
