Sysprep: not required?

I'm used to image deployment software requiring that an image is sysprepped in order for hardware independent imaging and driver deployment to be performed.
During the training video I watched it was mentioned during the q&a you "can" sysprep an image to remove unique identifiers and driver information but it was framed in a way that made it seem optional.

Is this the case, and if so how does desktop central add/inject drivers onto a system during deployment?

My normal process for building an image to date has been to build the image on a VM in Audit mode, sysprep the image, capture it and then revert to a pre-sysprep snapshot.
