Storage of Software Repository

Storage of Software Repository

Hi there,

We ran into an issue the other week where our Desktop Central server became overloaded and everything went down fairly hard. This is because the 2tb of storage we had set aside for Desktop Central and it's repositories became overloaded and filled the drive to the point where we only had a few kb left. To fix this, we purchased a dedicated NAS for storing the the various repositories. We've moved the repositories to the NAS and made the necessary changes to point the patches, updates, and script repositories to their respective shares on the NAS.

Today I started working on rebuilding the packages  (we have been pre-packaging so that deployment is faster and easier on our staff) and noticed something. When we create a package to be delivered via HTTP, they get copied out of the NAS and back onto the server running Desktop Central. The problem with this, is now the software exists both on the NAS and the server, and we will eventually run into the same issue where the server's storage will be filled.

I would prefer the server pull the packages from the NAS and leave it on the NAS. If this is not possible, then I would rather it leave the packages on the NAS until the point of deployment where it is then copied to the server at that time. Upon completion of deploying the software/package to the client via HTTP, the server should then automatically delete the package, thus keeping the server clean. I am hoping that this is something that others would agree with me on, and perhaps we would see this adjustment in either a patch or the next version of Desktop Central.

I only noticed this when checking the folder size of Desktop Central on the server and noticed that it increased in size considerably since we re-installed it. Here are the folders that have "ballooned" as we prepared packages for deployment via HTTP:

C:\Program Files\DesktopCentral_Server\webapps\DesktopCentral\client-data\swuploads
C:\Program Files\DesktopCentral_Server\webapps\DesktopCentral\client-data\1\swuploads
