Start workstation scan from script

Many of the workstations I would like to inventory are mobile systems connected to our networks via VPN's and never coming into contact with a hardwired network. Is there a way to initiate an inventory scan for a particular system outside of the management console? Ex. by running an application or browsing to a specific url?
