SNMP queries not working

Just installed the free version of OpManager on Linux. I got it to detect the machines on our network and added 10 of them to monitor.
I am unable to get the s/w to report on the performance through SNMP
To isolate the issue, I ran the LinuxAgent from Adventnet on one machine with 8001 port option. I then tried to query from the OpManager ( Setting the port to 8001 through the admin->SNMP Parameters form )
It doesnt connect. Is there something more I need to do
( please be aware that I am a complete novice in this area. So a more detailed, step by step procedure to get it working would help a lot ).
