SMS modems in virtualized environments

At the moment we are using OpManager 11600 on a bare metal installation with a serial port attached GSM modem. We are planning on moving and upgrading to OpManager 12300 on a new virtualized server (most likely Hyper-V 2016), and then we will most likely have a problem with the serial port GSM modem and virtualized OpManager server. I was wondering what kind of solutions or products others have used with GSM modems and virtualized installations? Network modem? USB modem? Some kind of COM port emulation? SMS alerts are important for us, so leaving the SMS alert feature out of the new installation is not an option for us.
Recommendations?
