Skinning/Complete Customisation

I am using a demo of op manager, one of our requirements for an SNMP Monitoring software is the ability to fully customise the way it looks, currently the 'templates' are very VERY confusing, is there a way to build a custom template without having to edit a load of Java...this '.do' extension isn't a physical file from what I can tell so although editing of the HTML is ok, nothing seams to be particularly straightforward enough for me to just simply edit the pages. do you have a tutorial for this or is it not a feature of the software or...
