Setup monitoring of Dell PowerEdge disk array

Setup monitoring of Dell PowerEdge disk array

I had to hunt for a while to get this monitor working as I'm a SNMP n00b. I thought I would share it with the rest of the n00bs out there.

First thing you have to do is install Dell Server Administrator on the server you want to monitor. There should be a short-cut on the server desktop to install this, but if not you can get if off the resource disks that came with the system or off the Dell web site.

Next, install if necessary, and enable SNMP. Here is a good Microsoft doc on setting this up. support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324263. All I ever do is install SNMP, if it isn't installed, then in Services, find and double-click on SNMP, click on the Security tab, ensure "public" is an accepted community name, and click the "Accept SNMP packets from any host". Click OK and you should be good to do. This isn't a secure config though, so if you work for NASA, read up on SNMP in Windows.

Next thing you have to do is download the MIB file from Dell, get it from support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R112376&formatcnt=2&libid=0&fileid=146997. Run the exe file and choose where to extract the MIB files. Then browse to that directory and copy the 10892.mib and dcstorag.mib files to your OpManger mibs directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\AdventNET\ME\Opmanager\mibs).
In OpManager, under Admin, choose Device Templates. Find the Windows 2000 or 2003 template (which ever you run) and click "Add Monitors" near the bottom. From the next window choose "New Monitor".
This is where you use that new MIB file you copied. Click on Select and wait for the MIB browser to open. When it does choose dcstorag.mib from the drop-down. Navigate to enterprises\dell\storage\software\storageManagement\globalData. Choose agentGlobalSystemStatus and click OK.

Give the Monitor it's names and description. Set the monitor intreval, say 5 mins. Put "status code" in the Units. Set the threshold Alert = 4 or 5 (read below), Rearm Value of 3. Click on advanced and choose Critical, then on OK. Then click "Apply" near the bottom of the Device Template window. OpManager will ask if you want to apply the template to some devices, so either pick the server to want to modify, or simply navigate to that server under Maps and add it manually.

Browse to the server you added the Monitor to, and click the edit button on the new monitor (e.g. "Dell Array Monitor"). Click test and you should see a 3 as the result. Sometimes OpManager times-out when clicking Test, so try a couple times.

If it works, you can now setup a email notification based on the Monitor. If it doesn't work, you need to do some SNMP troubleshooting on the system. Good luck!

This OID returns one of the possible values:

1: Other
2: Unknown
3: OK
4: Non-critical
5: Critical
6: Non-recoverable
