Scope of Management - Technology and Guidelines

Scope of Management (SoM) is the gateway to Desktop Central product and to Desktop Management. Here is a brief technology overview and guidelines, which will make SoM much simpler.

The Technology

Desktop Central, leverages Active Directory and Group Policy Object (GPO) technologies to push configurations to the desktops.

What is GPO?

Group Policy Object (GPO) is a collection of settings which resides in Active Directory that determines the looks and behavior of the defined groups of users and computers. Group Policy Objects has server and client-side components. When a Group Policy is applied to a user or computer, the client component interprets the policy and makes the appropriate changes to the environment. These client components are known as Group Policy Client Side Extensions.

What we do while defining SoM?

Desktop Central has its own Client Side Extensions for the configurations. As answered earlier, SoM is the place where you define the working boundary for Desktop Central. By defining SoM, Desktop Central registers Client Side Extensions (CSE) to the desktops using GPO which enables them to be managed by Desktop Central.

SoM can be defined at different levels like Domain, Organizational Unit (OU), Multiple OU and also Computers (From SP5/40500 build). You have to provide Domain Admin User account credentials to complete the process. Immediately after this procedure you are ready to go ahead with configuration settings.

SoM Defining - Guidelines

While defining the SoM, the follow points would help for smooth, hassle free operation.

- You have to provide the Domain Admin User account to define the managed computers. The browse button will list the users who are all in the domain admin security group.

- Ensure that you supply the correct credentials for the Domain Admin User account you specify.

- Make sure the administrator or Domain Admin User account has the permission to create GPO in the AD. (You can check this using the Active Directory Users and Computers tools in the Administrative tools)
