Request id gets garbled

Can somebody tell me how to avvoid having the 'number' sign garbled?

Sometimes I want to append information to an existing request via email. To do this I include the request id in the email subjet field. Still, sometimes the 'number' sign ("#" is somehow "translated" into something else. Example:

"Request id ##4698##" turns into "Request id =23=234698=23=23?="

Strange thing is that this does not always happen.

This problem results in new requestes being generated instead of having the email appended to the exisisting request.
