questions regarding Opmanager, Vendor MIB before buy it
Hi,
We are busy to test OpManager and we found a very good product.
But, there is all the time a "but" :-), maybe my knowledge is not good, we have some questions regarding our product.
- MIB SNMP
You have some vendor-specific mibs. Nice but how can we integrate this kind of mib for other products?? ( Like Veritas Backup Exec, for example ?? )
- Trap SNMP
Same question. We have some Cisco routers which are well discovered but some trap isn't recognize. Just basic TRAP. How can we integrate this easily in place of create a trap processor for each event if we have all mib file concerning materials???
- Discovering
We have Lotus Domino Server with SNMP for W2K and Lotus activated. OpManager find a W2K server but if we define the device type "Lotus Domino", we must put all lotus monitoring separately. Ok, Maybe it's better to discover first W2K for CPU and so on but it isn't possible to make a multiple select of specific vendor Mib ??? each monitor must be selected separately after 4 or 5 click.... boring :-). A Global select of a "specific vendor monitor" or "application monitor" can be nice.
- Summary
Can we found a summary of all objects that we monitor??? how many servers, routers ??
- Performance and tuning
The process run on a PIII 1.2Ghz with 1Ga RAM and through the web interface, we must wait some seconds. Ok, I know, "damn, some seconds" but when you click and receive your answer after 10 second, it can be too long to administrate. You can imagine if you want to select all applications monitor for Domino Server ( see above ) separately and for each server..... It takes too many times for simple jobs.
- FailOver or Clustering
Can Opmanager run on 2 servers??? If found fails, the second can handle the failure or the maintenance. And if it's possible, 2 servers on different OS?? Like that we can monitor W2K machines with snmp and WMI on one server and the rest with the other server?? It can be a suggestion for the 6th version :-)
- Dependencies.
We can define only one dependency but for us, we use all "twice".... We are all the time in DRP mode :-) ( Disaster Recovery Plan ). And my request above about FailOver concern also this question.
- Routers
When a router is discovered, he parses the server through SNMP but it shows only interface with IP addresses..... Our Internet Line is IPUnnumbered...... So, impossible to have a view of our traffic.
Or if we have some servers with multiple network interfaces ( like proxy ), he monitors only the discovered IP address . We must define the device like router to activate all interfaces and after redefine server to have this one in the good category.
- Custom monitoring
Why only in SNMP???? We give the opportunity to monitor server with Telnet/SSH/WMI but only some settings.
We put some custom settings but it doesn't work ... "no data available".
- Proxy Server Settings
Sorry, we don't have any authentication on our proxies.... So, we can't put a proxy server unless wa have fill all fields....
-Licensing
We see that 5 users is the maximum but.... is that possible to deal more users ???
-Third Party monitoring
For some applications, any monitoring tools cannot answer to our need. For example. To test an ODBC connection to a SQL server ( not MS-SQL or MySQL ), it's better to make a good handshake not just a 'telnet connection'. For that, we have a C program which load ODBC Drivers and make a nice, simple and good connection. If not, we fill the log files with garbage :-) And you know, a lot of people can justify a problem with that ' look all bad connections !!!! The problem come from this !!!! ). And a good monitoring isn't a monitoring that you don't see?? :-). This kin of option can be really appreciate....
'voil', I think that I've said all 'problems' that I discovered during the test. Our 'big problem' is trap snmp.
thank you for your cooperation.
