Good morning,
So, while working on deploying our environment in OpManager, I found an interesting peculiarity.
Our entire environment is virtual, save for a few devices here and there. During the discovery process, I first added the vcenter devices to detect all of our resident servers and later added SNMP to those devices.
On the inventory screen, it shows these servers as part of the following groups;
Category -> Servers
Type -> Windows 2012R2
Now, I later came to learn that if you add a device through a vmware vcenter, it applies 2 device templates. The VMWareVirtualMachine template and the 2012r2 template (For 2012 servers).
At some point, for some reason or another, I needed to remove one of the virtual machines and re add it. What resulted is I can add the server via SNMP, and not get the VMWare monitors, or I can re add the device via the vcenter snapshot page, and not get the SNMP monitors.
In addition, if I re add the device via the vcenter snapshot page, it correctly categorizes the server as a VMWare virtual server, but I am unable to poll the VCenter for vmware telemetry.
Attempts to add both device templates fails, and I can only seem to get one set of monitors to apply. It appears to be 'stuck' in whatever template it started in. For example, if the server is added via SNMP, and I remove it from Server2012 template, no changes are affected. It says 'operation complete', however, when I go review of the associated devices for 2012r2, the device is still there. Also, if I associate the device to VMWare Virtualmachines, I get the same 'operation complete' message, refresh the page and go check the VMWareVirtualMachine device associations, and the device still is not present there.
So, am I correct in assuming that servers that are VMWare machines have 2 templates associated? Or is there a hidden template that I am not seeing?
Also, when I create a custom template, It would seem I can only add monitors of one type to said template (SNMP vs WMI vs VMWare)? Is there a way to create a monitor with a mixture of monitoring protocols?
